The 10 year anniversary of the MID-SOUTH CHESS CAMP
is looking to be the largest to date. So large that they have had to add another instructor. Now, along with GM Alex Stripunsky, GM Robert Hess, WIM Alisa Melekhina, IM Raja Panjwani, Andre Duvall, will be internationally rated FM Teddy Coleman.
A recent graduate from Harvard University.

Ever feel like you don't have a chance at winning a national championship because there are too many high-rated players to compete with? Well, in Memphis on June 4-5, 2011 the U.S. Amateur South rolls into town to give everyone a chance at getting a national title. The U.S. Amateur is only open to people with a rating under 2200. That means grandmasters stay away! This tournament will be held at the University of Memphis in two sections: Championship (under 2200) and Reserve (under 1600). It promises to be an exciting action-packed event with five rounds. And you might even get to see a grandmaster or two! Don't worry, they cannot play but Grandmaster Alex Stripunsky among others will be walking around. They will be willing to meet you and even sign autographs if you want.

Memphis Chess Highlights

GM Robert Hess.
GM Hess is one of the most promising young stars on the United States Chess Scene. GM Hess's meteoric rise in the chess world began with his sweep of the 2009 National High School Championship in Nashville. After being awarded a wildcard berth to the 2009 U.S. Championship, GM Hess, originally seeded 17th out of 24 players, put on a remarkable performance, falling just short of the championship title with a second-place finish. Some other highlights in GM Hess's career include: Member of 2010 US Olympian Team, 2nd Place Negroponte Open 2010, World Team Championship Silver Medal 2009, 1st Place tie Foxwoods Open 2008, US Junior Championship 1st 2006.
GM Hess achieved his first grandmaster norm in Foxwoods 2008 and earned the final two in quick succession at the Spice Spring Invitational and at Foxwoods Open, 2009. He was awarded the Samford Chess Scholarship and is attending Yale University. Not only is GM Hess at home on the chess board but he is also at home on the football field, where he successfully played during his high school years. He is no stranger to chess coaching as he has been involved with teaching the Dalton Chess Team of New York and also has worked as coach for the Grandmaster Camp at the Marshall Club in New York.
Another newcomer will be

IM Raja Panjwani.
IM Panjwani is an International Master from Canada majoring in physics at the University of Western Ontario. IM Panjwani began his study of chess at the tender age of five and by the age of twelve, he found himself a National Master. He is a six-time National Youth Champion of Canada and has represented Canada at numerous international events including five World Youth Championships. In 2006, he placed 5th in the World Youth Championship and in that same year, he captured the title of Canadian Blitz Chess Champion. In 2009, he received his third and final IM norm at the World Open and took home the Canadian Junior Champion title shortly after. IM Panjwani plans to attend medical school and is working toward receiving his GM title.
Parents if you do not see the huge value this opportunity brings for your childs chess game, I am sorry that you would hinder your childs chances to learn from the best here locally in Memphis.
